(KRON) -- A pedestrian who was walking across Interstate 80 in Vallejo early Thursday morning was killed after being struck by a Tesla being operated in its autonomous self-driving mode, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 2:34 a.m. on westbound I-80 at the I-780 interchange. First responders found a 71-year-old Vallejo man who had sustained fatal injuries. The Tesla driver, a 26-year-old San Francisco man, remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities.

“The driver stated the vehicle was being operated in Full Self-Driving (FSD) autonomous mode at the time of the crash,” CHP wrote.

Officers reviewed the Tesla’s dash camera video, which captured the fatal collision. According to CHP, the Tesla was being driven in the middle lane at 70 mph while the pedestrian was crossing the freeway from the right shoulder to the center divider.

“The video showed the Tesla’s brakes being applied as the vehicle steered to the left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian,” CHP wrote. “Despite these evasive actions, the right front portion of the Tesla struck the individual.”

After the initial collision involving the Tesla, authorities believe the pedestrian was struck by at least one other vehicle while he lay in the roadway. However, no other vehicle stopped at the scene.

CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about other vehicles involved in the crash to contact the CHP Solano Area office.

All lanes of westbound I-80 were reopened by 4:43 a.m.
